  17. <p>    With such a proposition, who could lose? Take Jackie Mason,
  18. the veteran Borscht Belt comic. Put him in a sitcom produced by
  19. the same people who created hits for Bill Cosby and Roseanne
  20. Barr. Give it the surefire time period following No. 1-rated
  21. Roseanne. Almost every TV prognosticator in the business picked
  22. Chicken Soup as the season's big hit. But Mason had a troubled
  23. autumn. He got bad reviews, both for his acting and for making
  24. racially inflammatory remarks during the New York City mayoral
  25. race. More dismaying to ABC, Chicken Soup -- though the
  26. highest-rated of any new show this fall -- regularly lost nearly
  27. one-third of the huge Roseanne audience. Last week the network
  28. abruptly canceled its can't-miss hit. Moral: when it comes to
  29. TV programming, nobody knows borscht.
